The Weed Alert Program is an initiative of the Cross-Catchments Weeds and Feral Animals Initiative. Its development was funded by the National Weeds Program through the National Prickle Bush Management Group’s Prickly Acacia Program. Ongoing maintenance of this site is provided by Desert Channels Queensland.

The Weed Alert Program is designed to work with and through shire councils and Land Protection Officers to alert land managers about weeds already in their area and others that may be spreading in their direction.

A key element of the Weed Alert Program will be timely advice from shire councils to rural landholders on a single A4 sheet carrying a black and white version of the above logo. Not only will these advices carry notification of the spread of a particular weed, they will inform land managers on the best management methods (mechanical, chemical, pasture management, biological) and give a list of contacts for further information.

To complement this A4 stationery, there will be a simple information poster that will be updated and displayed as necessary.

"The establishment of a National Prickle Bush Management Group (NPBMG) in December 2001 and the employment of a National Prickle Bush Coordinator has markedly increased the coordination of prickly acacia management at a national level. The NPBMG is also responsible for national coordination of prickly acacia and parkinsonia. Handling of the three WONS (Weeds of National Significance) by a single national management group was deemed necessary due to the similarities between the species. The NPBMG has developed an action plan to coordinate implementation of the national strategic plans. This is complemented by a draft National Communication and Extension Plan that also covers the three ‘prickle bush’ WONS species."
