Weed status of the Barcoo Shire as of 1st June 2005.
This page has 4 parts: Barcoo Shire Barcoo Shire is relatively weed free. While the major weed in the shire is parkinsonia, there are several smaller infestations of other weeds such as mesquite, rubber vine and prickly acacia. It is feasible to eradicate these weeds from the shire with increased landholder education and cooperation. Parkinsonia is common in the channels of the Thomson River, lesser so in the channels of the Barcoo River and Cooper’s Creek. A couple of smaller channel systems have scattered Parkinsonia and Mesquite. A containment and control approach is needed for the more heavily infested areas, while eradication of smaller infestations is achievable. The control of parkinsonia is of the utmost importance in Barcoo Shire, as unchecked it will spread into the vast network of braided channels of Cooper’s Creek and progressively towards Lake Eyre. There is one established infestation of parthenium weed, but this is very small and kept well contained. Barcoo Shire is committed to keeping parthenium from entering the shire through prompt treatment of any isolated plants, continual surveying for new outbreaks and planning for the provision of washdown facilities in each of the shire’s three towns Jundah, Windorah and Stonehenge. Barcoo Shire Council recognises the weed potential of leucaena and is considering introducing controls on its introduction. The following is a list of known weeds in the shire and their classification. For information about these classifications, click here.
